Dear Doctor,

My name is Dave Armer.  I am the President of the United Optical Workers Union. I am asking for your help.

Tom Rosa wants our stores open seven days a week. He fought to eliminate time and a half pay for Sundays
during our Empire Vision contract negotiations. He is now pushing the Union, and will succeed without your
help, to open more stores on Mondays. He is desperate to make up for his poor management by expanding
hours and stretching staffs thinner than ever before. Only the Doctors of our company have the power to stop
this, if, you speak with one voice. You have the power to organize your own separate bargaining unit, with your
own elected spokespersons. You can force a contract that will keep us closed on Sundays and limit their
expansion into Monday work days.

Given this fact set and at the urging of several of your fellow Optometrists I am compelled to offer you an
opportunity. I can facilitate a process allowing the optometrists of this company a chance to have an election,
overseen by the United States National Labor Relations Board.(NLRB) You may choose, in a fair democratic
fashion, whether or not to form your own bargaining unit. If you make this choice the bargaining unit would be
composed of your fellow optometrists and you would elect your own representatives to bargain and represent
you before the management of this company.

I believe that the Doctors of this company could exert an influence far greater than your numbers would
indicate, in redirecting this company to a more professional and respected status in the optical community. I
can state with confidence that many opticians are embarrassed by the level of professionalism that Tom Rosa
has lead us to. As a separate organized labor unit you will have strong legal protections that you do not
currently enjoy and will have a voice that Mr. Rosa can not ignore.

For those of you that wish to have an election, run and monitored by the NLRB, you need to return the
enclosed, confidential card and SASE to indicate your “showing of interest” in having an election.

If more than 30% of you return your “showing of interest” card I will petition the NLRB on your behalf. They will
decide if an election is warranted, set a date, and both the union and the company will have several weeks to
make our cases before you vote. This is legally protected activity.

As many of you already know, I love the democratic process. An election will encourage debate and an open
dialog between the company and the Optometric associates. I understand that many of you are fiercely
independent and wary of the reputation of labor unions. It is that same feeling that lead me down this path five
years ago. I am aware that the inclusion of the brightest and most capable individuals in our shared profession
may well redefine who ultimately leads this union into the future. I can think of no greater reward for the
struggle I undertook to clean up this local than to bring new blood into the leadership roles.

I hope you will choose to help me restore logic and greater professionalism to our company. If not, I still thank
you for your time. Let the debate begin!!!!!!!

                                                                                                                           Yours truly,

                                                                                                                           David R. Armer
